Wild Country

Edith Tankus

Meeting and working with Annie has been one of the highlights of my theatre career.
Besides being a mensch in every sense, she is the person that bonds a room, brings the people and all their disparate parts together.

As a writer her work is astonishing, intellectual mythic and fiercely funny. I first met her as an actor playing Rapunzel which she wrote for Kneehigh Theatre - always supportive, quietly drawing out the most compelling narrative, making you feel as if you’ve written it yourself. But you didn’t.

As a collaborator on my first autobiographical show, she has a slow cook approach, letting the story seep into your bones, midwifing the narrative into being. I felt as if I wrote it all myself. But I didn’t.
— Edith Tankus

Edith was Rapunzel in the first iteration of Rapunzel back in 2006-8 and we’ve been firm friends ever since. When I first talked to Edith about this show, she had some ideas and an itch to make a solo, storytelling show based on events in her own life. After extensive rich conversations I came up with a framework, central metaphor and key scenes for the show, and then began working on these with Edith. We worked closely over several years - interrupted by the pandemic - and the result was Wild Country.
